PROJECTS

OBJECTIVE, OUR DREAM

To create the "Bej Zamná" Social Educational Sustainable Center from a regenerative cultures approach, which operates to provide educational services from an integrated and innovative pedagogical perspective to children of early and middle childhood and at the same time acts as a center for the promotion of learning, training and formation of the community in areas such as: health, care of the environment, art, culture, and productive entrepreneurship, among others.

OUR CLOSEST GOAL: PILOT PROJECT

We currently have a pilot project for the Bej Zamná Cozumel Social Educational Center. We offer kindergarten (preschool), lower primary education (first and second grade) and extended hours (after school). Hours: 8:00 am to 1:30 pm.

We offer:

🟣 1) A Community-Based Educational Experience: Unlike traditional schools where families cannot be involved in their children’s school affairs as much as they’d like, our school thrives because we all function as a family. The collaboration between teachers, students and families is what makes our school unique.

🟣 3) Learning centered on humanism, art, culture, emphasizing on environmental awareness. Our curriculum offers a more holistic and valuable learning experience than conventional education.

🟣 4) Our curriculum is tailored to the developmental stages of children. We do not rush their cognitive-intellectual learning by forcing them to learn things before they are ready. Our educational approach considers five developmental areas (cognitive, motor, language, social and emotional). The subjects that support these five areas include:

🌼 SUBJECTS:

1) Watercolor: using high-quality natural pigments. Art is a bridge that allows children to imagine and express themselves. It is a therapeutic, relaxing activity that children greatly enjoy.

2) Modeling: Various natural elements, such as clay, sand and natural dough are used to provide children with a complete sensory experience filled with textures, colors and smells. It allows children to create shapes and objects with their hands, imagine stories, and represent them, reflecting what they see in nature. For them, modeling is a very enjoyable game, but it’s more than that; it enables them to use their hands to intentionally create new things, which is the foundation of "I CAN," a valuable skill for their daily life.

3) Weaving: One of the most challenging subjects but also one that brings the most satisfaction and pride. It is taught at different levels and techniques, from thread preparation to finger weaving, sewing, embroidery and crochet. This weekly activity allows children to greatly develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and frustration management, all necessary before they can hold a pencil and begin the process of literacy. Children create wonderful things through manual Arts, such as pillows, necklaces, toys and much more. They love their creations.

4) Baking: One of the children’s favorite classes, not only because it is fun to play with dough but also because it is delicious to taste. They learn about the states of matter, different cereals and foods, processes and ingredients, gaining valuable Life skills as they learn to cook. In this class, they make wheat bread in various shapes, Mexican snacks, desserts and occasionally other important recipes. Children develop significant motor skills for handling dough, kneading, shaping, as well as cutting, peeling, and grating vegetables. They take pride in being good cooks. Cooking in a group fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity, creating a healthy environment where everyone enjoys the final product.

Children learn through circle time, stories, rhymes, verses and songs. They learn to listen, repeat and speak more clearly, expanding their vocabulary and memorization skills, all of which are necessary before beginning formal literacy. Listening and learning other languages are promoted through play and songs, allowing them to learn some words in Mayan, Nahuatl, English, French and sign language.

We have two wonderful periods of free play! One is in nature🍃 (we are in a pedestrian neighborhood with a beautiful park right in front of the school) where we can run, jump, make pretend meals with plants, plant and water flowers, search for insects, play traditional games, draw with chalk and much more. The other period of free play is inside the school, where we create various imitation games (what the adult does, the child mimics in their play), role-playing games (one is the mom, and the other is the baby) and a wide variety of games using fabrics, wooden blocks, kitchen toys and fabric and wooden dolls. The children create multiple stories, their own rules and group agreements. Free play greatly enhances imagination, which is the precursor to creativity (a great skill for facing life’s challenges), as well as healthy social interaction and a sense of community in the child.

In addition to all of the above, the curriculum also takes into account the environmental, social, and cultural aspects of the surrounding area. For instance, if it is a very hot season, we might make fresh desserts instead of baking bread. The stories are created or adapted to reflect the environment of Cozumel. In this way, children learn about the fauna and culture of the region and country through play, songs, and stories. We ensure that children learn everything they need to at their current age before moving on to the significant intellectual work in the school stage (primary). We provide loving, warm and empathetic treatment to the children and families that make up our educational community. We love our work; Bej Zamná is a dream come true, and we hope that the right families will join us. With their presence and that of their children, we will strengthen our noble social-educational center for the benefit of future generations and the rights of children.

It is worth mentioning that having this space will allow us to consistently develop extracurricular activities for girls and boys, as well as courses, workshops, talks and free or affordable activities for the benefit of the Cozumel community. These activities will cover the aforementioned topics: Environmental Care, Holistic Health, Art and Culture and activities to promote local production and the circular economy.

SOCIAL IMPACT

The creation of the "Bej Zamná" Social Educational Sustainable Center would allow Cozumel to develop an innovative and regenerative project, created by the community, for the community. Such is the scope of its vision that materializing it will allow us to contribute to the fulfillment of one or more of the goals of the 17 SDGs Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Development Program, carrying out direct action on the following goals: SDG 4 Quality Education; SDG 5 Gender Equality; SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities; SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production; SDG 13 Climate Action; SDG 14 Life Below Water; SDG 15 Life on Land and Ecosystems; SDG 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; SDG 17 Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.

BECOME PART OF THE FAMILY (BEJ ZAMNÁ ACTIVE VOLUNTEER)

The active-volunteers are the people who help Bej Zamná Cozumel A.C. to materialize actions in a continuous way; attending to the urgent needs and challenges that arise along the way. We don't see it as a way of saving money, but rather as a human resource of invaluable worth, which allows us to create a better team than the current one, more capable, stronger and consolidated, with more ideas, creativity, proposals and above all with a lot of spirit, love, dedication, discipline and will to collaborate in improvement of our cause.

If there is something that unites us, it is the belief that we can change the world. The children of today and tomorrow deserve it, and it is our duty to do everything in our power to make this possible, and we will do it from the bottom of our hearts by taking action for the good of the community.

We have never wanted to be a company, nor to generate income for our benefit, but to help each other grow for the betterment of society, and wishing with all our might to achieve in the medium term the economic stability that will allow the network of active volunteers to enter as the first paid work team of Bej Zamná Cozumel A.C.
